STRATEGIC PLANNING

Taking your vision from big idea to practical steps and achievable goals
If you have big goals for your organization, but you feel caught in a tangled web of complexity, I can help. For more than 25 years, I have worked with nature-centered organizations to figure out how to tackle big challenges and take advantage of big opportunities for substantial impact. For example, I helped colleagues in Tanzania design a complex project to achieve goals in biodiversity conservation, public health, agriculture, education, and women’s empowerment. I worked with my colleagues to understand threats and opportunities, to develop achievable plans of action, and to create and monitoring and evaluation. Together, we were able to document the benefits of our work, the lessons we learned, and used evidence to make decisions to improve our effectiveness.

RESEARCH

Using data and knowledge to identify lessons for your work
Have you hit a wall with a new issue or a challenging problem? Are your staff already stretched, without resources to better understand the challenge? I can help to untangle the questions and potential ways forward. I recently helped a large international research organization to finalize a complex document by filling in gaps in research and developed a practical framework that enables policy makers, researchers, and practitioners with decision-making around wildlife conservation and food systems. For a natural burial ground, I developed a set of cost-effective strategies to mitigate the risks to soil health from burial of cremated remains based on peer-reviewed publications and interviews with soil scientists.

COALITION BUILDING

Building trust through understanding, values, & mutual goals for impact
Partnerships are essential to conservation success, and I am proud to have co-developed and managed many that have implemented conservation efforts on the ground, including a portfolio of projects that brought multiple funding streams together for greater conservation impact. Over five years, this portfolio leveraged more than $90 million from private sector partners in areas of high biodiversity. In building partnerships, I prioritize trust, understanding, and accountability in relationships with partners, as I did when I built and managed USAID’s One Health Working Group. I learned to speak the language of experts on public health, agriculture, business development, and sought to understand their values, mandates, metrics, and messaging. With this approach, I helped to grow the working group from a handful of close collaborators to a 300+ person force to advocate for better, more sustainable outcomes.

COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES

Storytelling with impact
What is your story? Why do you do your work? How does it make an impact? I can help you to identify the audience you are trying to reach and to craft messages that reach them. At USAID, I served as both a technical expert and a strategic communications lead, producing reports to Congress, articles, fact sheets, and social media. I developed consistent, clear messaging about the importance of conservation for the natural world and for people’s health, food security, clean water, and livelihoods for these publications. Currently, I am managing social media for a natural burial ground and supporting a small business providing coaching and peer accountability groups.
